Comic 500 words 12/10/07

            The topic I chose was illegal immigration. I believe this is a very controversial subject because there are two sides to the fight and both are held strongly to their respective parties. On the one side the immigrants feel that they are rotting away in Mexico and have no opportunities to make money or allow their children to prosper so they feel the need to come to the states. Although they believe they are not hurting anyone, no matter how hard they try if they live in our country and use any sources our public funds aid to they are hurting our economy. On the other hand is The United States government. They are thinking they are spending billions of dollars a year aiding to illegal immigrant needs in the school systems and health services. I showed the government’s side of things through my eight page paper we had to do for our last large assignment and I showed the illegal immigrants side of things through my comic book which I enjoyed creating. Anyone reading my paper should realize how it is definitely a bad thing for illegal immigrants to come here mainly because of how much money we spend on them annually, but then through the comic you see the situation from the other side of the spectrum. I wrote the comic so you could see what the illegal immigrants are thinking before hand and while they are making the move illegally to the states as well as after they have settled here. It really all boils down to each side wanting the greatest financial benefit. The government wants to save their money from aiding illegal immigrants and the illegal immigrants want to earn a real pay and live a happy life which in some cases is not possible in their homeland which in this case is Mexico.  

            I chose this topic because of how controversial it is. I like how it is such a large ordeal that continues to grow and really cannot be stopped just hopefully contained by the United States government and law enforcements. Also I wanted to see both sides of the story just to obtain a better understanding for the whole issue.

            Throughout my comic I tried to choose the images that best relayed the message of what I was trying to get across through the limited text. In some parts of the project it was somewhat difficult the keep the text to a minimum and still get the proper point across to the reader whom I cannot explain my points to. Also I tried to choose a variety of pictures so the reader would keep looking and attract attention rather than just whipping right through reading the one line sentences in each photo box. I think choosing the pictures to create visuals for the story I was creating was the most important part of this project because without them the reader would not be interested in my work or possibly not even know what was going on.

            This final project was partially what I expected. I thought it was going to be a lot more work then what it felt like. I believe it was a sufficient final project time-wise, but since it was enjoyable it did not feel so bad. I really thought I was going to dread making the comic book mainly because it was new software I had to work with and do a works cited along with getting it from one computer to another switching from Macs to Windows. I honestly thought I was going to hit a wall at some point and have to restart the whole thing. In all I liked the project and was proud to show it to different kids around my hall and felt good when I was going through it all when everything was done.

11/13 assignment

There are 3 main parts to the Toulmin model of argumentation; claim, data and warrant. The claim is the writers belief. The data is the evidence supporting the claim, and the warrant is the general statement linking the claim and the data together. The difference between the Toulmin model and Syllogism is that syllogism has a common word in the 1st two parts (major and minor premise). I see the syllogism model as having more use and i see this type as having more limitation because there must be that common word in the first two parts.

Carl Rogers

The key features of the rogerian argument are that before you reply you must verify what the other person said by writing it down or verbally verifying it with the other person without any opinions or anything involved, then you reply. Carl Rogers believes some things should be argued and this is the simplest most ethical way to make your argument without any misunderstanding or false beliefs. This can be useful in my final project because in any arguement this puts the stories in black and white and should be much easier to see the other persona side and what is lacking and where. Also dealing with the law and the causes someones actions created this should make it clear to the criminal why they should not do what they did and all the negatives that comes with their crime they viewed as harmless.

Unit 3 project

On my unit three project i am most likely going to make a dominant argument on illegal immigration since it is dealing with the law. My  issue could incorporate more than one type of arguement, it could be negotiable or inquirable. This is because we as americans do not know exactly where the immigrants are coming from in the sense of why they acted how they acted and what they would do in return for us allowing them to stay here and receive green cards. I believe incorporating more than one type of arguement can be benificial for a certain side of the arguement, but in my case if i am arguing for the law to be enforced a particular type of arguement is better.

10/9 assignment cipherspace

The similarities between multiasians and the latinos are that they are both a mix of multiple ethnicities due to no other choices of mating at the time they were conceived. The american men paired with the vietnamese during the war and there was a lack of european women in america while poeple just started to migrate to the USA which left the latina women and others living close by. The differences are the latinos werent really abandoned though because they already lived here where as the multiasian children were left in asia with the mother for the most part. This caused people to look down upon the child because the mother was basically used and not cared about or anything. This causes the multiasians to not really have a “homeland” where as the latinos are functioning better. Also the multiasians didnt really ever know the american men at all where the latinas may have lived with ro seriosuly dated the americans because they both occupied the same lands permanently. In both cases it is not something special though, it was more acceptable for the indians/latinas to be with the american men as it was for the vietnamese women to be left behind by the american troops. I dont believe the cases bring up the same questions because the vietnamese women were basically used and the women her in america were wedding and dating.

10/4 assignment

There are many different ways to analyze a reading while you read it, but to get the best analysis out of what you read you have to leave all judgement and habits/routines aside. If you are stuck in a habit you will overlook things that may have importance. The main challenge is stepping outside of your usualy ways and opening up to recieve information in a completely unbiast manner. While reading i cant imagine myself getting all the information down the first time without re-reading small sections or highlighting to then read over again later. I think thee best advice here is telling us to step out of our habits therfor we notice all things instead of what pops out of our ordinary recognition. The next time I read somehting i will definitly try to start reading with a clean slate and not have any ideas pre-thought up or allow my normal habits influence my reading.

-I care about these subjects because they will hold my interest and make me want to find out more. I started caring about them because to me they are interesting and a lot of people wonder the specifics about the topic but not too many people actually know.

- I need to know more about these subjects because in order for me to be successful i will need to be a good parent as well as prosper in my career all without breaking any laws.

4. People would need to know how to be a good parent because if they want their kids to turn out right they must lead them correctly. Also, if anyone wanted to be a historian, work in a museum, teach, or write a research paper on the topic it would be very beneificial to knwo about the great wall of china and how pyramids were constructed. These are probably the two most acked about things ever created.

8.CREDO- A Latin word which means “a set of fundamental beliefs or a guiding principle”
9.PARADOX- a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth

Knowing these words helps me greatly in understanding the story. Besides the words listed I looked up a couple of other words which made things much more clear to me. There were several insidences throughout the reading where I did not know what the author was talking about. I now know to instead of skipping the words I do not know it is very benificial to take the 1 minute and look them up to better my understanding of the reading. I was somewhat lost while reading and did not really get the point to the reading until after I looked up thee definitions. I actually had no clue what the reading was about because the major supply of sentence changing words I did not know. Most of all the story made a lot more sense after I looked up “Multiculturalism”. This is becasue the whole stroy is based on “multiculturalism”, without knowing this word nobody would knwo what the story was about. I realize now the story is about differing cultures trying to meet and recieve eachothers points of view responsibly. This means to drop your self-centered normal views and be able to consciously see what other people see from where they are in their life/environment. This reading also made me realize that women are still fighting for equal rights or at least the ability to be looked upon the same as males and have a right in the political world.

unit 1 intro/con.

intro:
Race; a human population partially isolated reproductively from other populations, whose members share a greater degree of physical and genetic similarity with one another than with other humans. The biologist are trying to say this does not exist, contrary to the dictionary and every single person’s better knowledge. In the world of literature, Does race really matter? Or does race itself exist at all? Every different writer has his or her own style and this may be because of the type of writing they do, how they were raised, the environment they were raised in or maybe even their race. It is argued that race does not exist, but we falsely percieve race as being a group of people with a common characteristic. For now, i will continue to use the word race as what we know it to be. To me race does not really affect my writing at all, I do not really notice the differences between different races. Obviously I see the difference in skin colors and such, but I do not act differently to or around any certain people and I do not stereotype any certain people. My identity does affect my writing because it allows me to write freely, which in a sense doesn’t affect my writing where others are restricted on what they can write because of their views on race. To me, I feel like I can relate to anyone and am open to everyone. This gives me the feeling of freedom when I write because I do not feel threatened or impartial to anything.

conclusion:
Regardless of the words we choose race does exist clearily. I think it is somewhat rediculous that we debate over wether or not race exists because of the so many different traits and cultures. Race is what everyone thinks it is; why tell us a word is not what it is when everyone in the world uses it including dictionaries for the same meaning? It is up to the individual him/herself to allow race to effect their lives and it is up to the individuals themselves to allow people to recieve a stereotype about one another because of what they have done. If you do not want people looking down on you than do not do things people look down upon and then blame it on your race when you recieve a bad reputation. It is up to us to allow race, or what we believe race to be, play a role in our lives. And in literature, race should be the furthest thing affecting you, we are all people. The only differences are the body we are living in, to allow race to affect or restrict your writing ability is nonsense. Obviously some things may come easier to a writer if they’ve lived through the events and felt the real affects of what happened such as slavery, but other than the relation factors nothing to do with where you came from or who you are should affect your writing abilities.
